Basic Principles of Vaastu( Ten Directions)
The System of Ten Directions is very popular in the Indian Classical Texts which are described in detail as under :
1. POORVA ( East)
It is the Direction of Rising Sun. Indra& Sun are respectively the Directional Lord(Dikpala) and Planetary lord of East Direction. East gives Power, Position & Prosperity. Four of the 45 Demi Gods of East are – INDRA,ADITYA,SATYAKA& ARYAK occupy Eastern Sector.
2. AAGNEYA ( South-East)
SouthEastis the direction of Light & Fire. Agni & Venus are the directional lord and planetary lord of Aagneya respectively. It supplies heat & light, which are the purifying agents of nature. Seven of the Demi Gods – Bhrsa,Antriksha, Agni, Pushan, Vitatha, Savindr&Saavindra occupy the Aagneya Sector.
3. Dakshin (South)
It is the direction of scorching rays of Sun. Yama & Mars are
respectively the directional lord & planetary lord of this direction. South
showers unbearable heat of Summer season and thus should be kept closed. Four
of the demi gods- Brihatkshat, Yama, Gandharva and Vivasvat occupy the South.
It is the direction of radio-active infrared rays of the afternoon Sun. Pitar (Forefathers/Ancestors) and Rahu are respectively the directional lord & planetary lord of this direction. It gives poison like rays of Sun and is always recommended to keep high , heavy and closed.Seven of 45 demi gods- Bhringraja, Mrsa, Pitar, Dauwarik, Sugreeva, Indra and Indrajaya occupy the South-West sector.
5. Pashchim (West)
It is the direction of setting Sun. Varuna and Saturn are respectively the directional lord and planetary lord of this direction.It gives natural loght till late hours. Four of the demi gods- Pushpdanta, Varuna, Asura and Mitra occupy this sector.
6. Vayavya ( NothWest)
It is the direction of fresh winds
entry. Vayu & Moon are respectively the directional lord and planetary lord
of this direction. It supplies pure air, the greatest purifying agent of
nature. Seven of the demi gods- Shosha, Roga, Vayu, Naga, Mukhya, Rudra and
Rudraraja occupy this sector.
7. Uttar ( North)
It is the coolest direction. Kuber & Mercury are respectively the
directional lord and planetary lord of this direction. It showers Health &
Wealth on the inhabitants. Four of the demi gods- Bhallat, Soma, Mrga and
Bhudhar occupy this sector.
8. Ishaan (NorthEast)
It is the most pious direction.
Ish & Jupiter are respectively the directional lord and planetary lord of
this direction. It supplies the most beneficuntraviolet rays of Sun, which have
curative powers. Seven of demi gods- Aditi, Ish, Parjanya, Jayanta ,Aap and
Aapvatsa occupy this sector.
9. Aakash ( Space)
It is also called oordhava or upward
direction. It is the vast space surrounding us. It’s directional lord is Brahma and sometimes
Jupiter is considered its planetary lord. Jupiter is the lord of expansion.
Aakash gives the power of word and rules all the communications between the
mortal and immortal words.
10. Paataal
Its also called adho or downward direction. It’s the dark depth of earth. Its directional lord is Vasuki who is the king of cobras. Saturn is the lord of darkness and thus can be considered the planetary lord of deep depths. Paatalprovidesa stable foundation to the building. Lethargy, inactivity , sleepiness and Solidity are main qualities of Paatal.
